What is Green?

Green building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources: energy, water, and materials-while reducing building impacts on human health and environment during the building's lifecycle, through better design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal.

Green projects are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:

  • Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
  • Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity
  • Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation
What is Energy Star

Energy Star is an international standard for energy efficient consumer products. It was created by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The program is completely voluntary and the EPA estimates that it saved about $14 Billion in energy costs for 2006 alone. Energy Star certified appliances need to achieve at least 15% savings over the consumer average. In addition, refrigerators need at least 20% savings and dishwashers 41% to be Energy Star certified. How is Kieffer's Helping

Kieffer’s has been making a conscious effort in the past years to become more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. During recent renovations, Kieffer’s replaced old insulation in its showroom to hold heat better and added computer-timed central air units. After Kieffer’s takes away your old appliances, we send them to a recycling facility in Philadelphia which disposes of dangerous materials and recycles the scrap plastic and metal. Additionally, we compact all our cardboard in an industrial size bailer and send it to a paper recycling plant in Oaks, PA.  Our bailer serves as a cardboard drop off point for other local businesses to recycle their cardboard.  In the future Kieffer’s has plans to transition our truck fleet to bio-diesel engines, which will significantly cut down on our “carbon footprint”, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30-40%.
